LEED/Green

Official sponsor of GBA’s 2010 greenSCENE:  “A Celebration of Firsts!”

Sustainable design is a concept that Mascaro has been instrumental in supporting since 1993 when we completed the Heinz Family Foundation and Office projects, one of the first "green buildings" in the area. Over the past several years, we have assisted several owners in the LEED® certification process. These projects ranging from offices to manufacturing plants, encompassed over 2.5 million square feet with an aggregate construction cost of over $500 million.  In 2009, ENR's ranked Mascaro as #57 on their list of Top Green Contractors in the United States.

Mascaro utilizes an integrated team approach when managing the LEED® certification process from preconstruction through construction. A cohesive project team, consisting of the owner and its representatives, the design professionals, and Mascaro, needs to first identify the project’s LEED goals. Mascaro will work through an iterative process with the design team and owner to determine which level of LEED certification is achievable. Mascaro is there each step of the way to facilitate the process and to provide the owner and design team with the critical cost information and recommendations to make important LEED and budget related decisions. As construction begins, Mascaro can assist in compiling the documentation and paperwork associated with the LEED binder submission.

To aid in this process, Mascaro has over 25 LEED® certified specialists on staff. Their expertise is from all disciplines, i.e., project managers, project engineers, superintendents, estimators, and senior management.

In addition to assisting clients in constructing green facilities, we endeavor to promote the concepts of sustainable design. In 1997, Mascaro was a founding sponsor of the “Green Construction, A Symposium on Construction Management.” Hosted by the University of Pittsburgh, the symposium was one of the earliest organized efforts in the area to promote green building construction.

In October 2003, the University of Pittsburgh announced the creation of the Mascaro Sustainability Initiative, which is currently known as the Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation (MCSI). The MCSI will build on the Swanson School of Engineering’s educational program in green construction by helping to define the next generation of research in sustainability. The MCSI will conduct educational and outreach programs and sponsor a bi-annual scientific conference, bringing together academic and research professionals from various disciplines to share their expertise.
