Fabus Superhero 5K - 2015
|Team Mascaro participated in the Joey Fabus Superhero 5k on Sunday, September 20. The event was held in memory of Joey who lost his battle with DIPG in January 2015. DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma) is a rare form of cancer that affects the pons portion of the brainstem that controls the nervous system. Primarily affecting children, symptoms include double vision, inability to close the eyelids completely, drooping on one side of the face, and difficulty chewing and swallowing. Symptoms usually worsen with the rapidly growing tumor. Unfortunately, it is one of the most resistant of all cancers to chemotherapy treatments. As one of the leading sponsors of the event, a total of over $20,000 was raised to support the Joey Fabus Childhood Cancer Foundation for use in research to find a cure for this devastating disease. Over 700 runners and walkers came out to support the cause at the inaugural event. Plans are in the making for next year’s 5K on September 18, 2016.
